Coorow is a region in Western Australia that is steeped in history. The town was originally settled by European farmers in the 1860s, who were attracted to the area for its fertile soil and good rainfall. The region became known for its wheat farming, which remains a major industry to this day.

The name "Coorow" is thought to have been derived from the local Aboriginal word "kuriw" which means "place of the wild turkey". The area was traditionally inhabited by the Amangu people, who lived a semi-nomadic lifestyle, hunting and gathering throughout the region.

During the early years of European settlement, conflict between the Amangu people and the new settlers was common, as the traditional way of life for the Aboriginal people was disrupted by the arrival of foreign farmers and their livestock. Many Amangu people were forced off their land, and their numbers declined rapidly as a result of diseases brought by the Europeans.

By the turn of the 20th century, Coorow had become an established farming community, with a school, a post office, and several general stores. The population also continued to grow as more settlers arrived in the area.

During the First World War, Coorow played a vital role in the war effort, with local farmers producing large quantities of wheat and other crops to help feed the Allied troops. This led to a boom in the local economy, as demand for food and other supplies continued to grow.

Following the end of the war, Coorow experienced a period of growth and prosperity, with many new businesses and infrastructure projects being established. This included the construction of new roads, bridges, and irrigation systems, as well as the creation of new schools and hospitals.

In the years that followed, Coorow continued to thrive as a farming community, although the region also faced its fair share of challenges. This included droughts, floods, and other natural disasters, which could have a significant impact on local farmers and their crops.

Today, Coorow remains an important farming region in Western Australia, although the town has also begun to diversify its economy in recent years. New industries such as tourism and mining have helped to bring new jobs and economic opportunities to the area, while the region's natural beauty and rural charm continue to attract visitors from far and wide.

Despite the many changes that have taken place in Coorow over the years, the region's history and traditions remain an important part of its identity. From the ancient culture of the Amangu people, to the resilience and hard work of its European settlers, Coorow is a place that is truly rich in history.
